Velocitize Talks: Dr. Chris Brauer on AI and Values

As human beings we are naturally curious people who are typically keen to engage with the world around us and to express ourselves for others to see value in us and for us to see value in others. To be able to socialize and participate in the world in some meaningful way. I think AI offers a real opportunity to to give us a lot more of that in our lives.

Dr. Chris Brauer is Director of Innovations at Goldsmiths, University of London, and Founder of the Centre for Creative and Social Technologies (CAST). He conducted a recent study with WP Engine concerning AI and values.

In this episode of Velocitize Talks, we sit down with this accomplished academic, speaker, and entrepreneur as he shares his many insights on the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on human behavior, bots, and the pursuit of creativity.

The power of AI to amplify humanity [2:32]

AI has a real potential to free up time. At the core of that is, are we imaginative enough, are we capable of reconceiving that we may get our humanity back? For years we’ve been asked to behave a bit like machines.

Unlocking creativity [6:29]

Here is the need for not just optimization and efficiency; a redefinition, a reinvention of the notion of work. There’s a desperate need for creative and innovative solutions to help us escape what is barely a stagnant environment globally around new opportunities and problem solving.

Misconceptions of AI in the workplace [9:10]

There’s no job that I can think of at all that would be able to be replaced wholesale by an AI system. People understand what matters but AI systems don’t yet know what matters.

Unlocking the value out of AI systems [13:25]

You have to have a set of values and they have to be transparent and visible. They have to be imbued in everything that you do to generate further value and growth in your operations.

Algorithms and company goals [16:52]

If we accept that in a capitalist system there’s going to be goals which are to maximize revenue and profit we need to be super clear about that. You see lots of examples where people are doing that but they’re not saying they’re doing that; it’s creating a lot of distrust.
