Venture capital has a role to play in the marketing ecosystem, said Jessica Peltz-Zatulove, partner of MDC Ventures, the VC arm of the marketing holding company MDC Partners. “My vision for it is our thesis should be fueled by these pain points and white spaces that we see in the market as domain experts,” she told Velocitize Talks.
Partnerships with startups can be transformational to the business by adding new channels, data or just learning how to be more agile, said Peltz-Zatulove. Those relationships can solve problems marketers don’t even know exist yet.
Data is a key ingredient to make any progress, said Peltz-Zatulove. There are “explosive” amounts of data available today, but marketers need help making it work.
MDC Ventures focuses specifically on digital media, and several new technologies are showing promise to break into the Amazon space. Amazon is “a bit of a black box for marketers” said Peltz-Zatulove, so several startups are trying to unlock it for marketers.
Within the venture capital community, New York is becoming the center of efforts to diversify and adopt gender parity, said Peltz-Zatulove. She noted the success of startups, such as the recent Stitchfix, is adding to the growing field of case studies showing female-led businesses perform well: “I’m very bullish about this.”
