Velocitize Talks: Nabyl Charania of Rokk3r on Technologies of the Future

“Entrepreneurs don’t wait for governments. They don’t wait for the private sector, and they don’t wait for the customer.”

Digital disruption will continue to reshape society in coming years, said Nabyl Charania, chairman and CEO of startup platform Rokk3r. Hundreds of millions of people continue to come online, changing communications and expectations, he told Velocitize Talks.

Last year alone, 250 million people went online for the first time. “What we see is a global intelligence that is actually going to come to the forefront for the first time in human history.”

The Internet is democratizing information, enabling tools that give more people access to knowledge than ever before, said Charania. “The world’s intelligence is not only increasing, but becoming evident.” Additionally, the Internet is allowing people across the world to work together and collaborate in projects, adding to the pace of change.

Blockchain and cryptocurrency are examples of transformational technologies that have emerged from the ground up, thanks to technology. While cryptocurrency is a craze that could use some regulation, there is also a need for innovation that is fueling interest, he said.

Rokk3er is also working on artificial intelligence applications, even if the technology still needs to work out issues of platforms and data. “It’s closer than people think, but there are still technology, access, platforms that need to be worked out,” he said.

Regulation and government will also have to adapt to allow innovation to move faster. Legacy regulatory systems are not equipped to move at the speed that new technology moves, said Charania.
