How to Edit AI-Generated Content (4 Tips)

Content creators have embraced the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). This is probably because programs like ChatGPT offer speed, efficiency, and volume. However, AI-generated content typically needs some heavy editing. As long as you know to fix any inaccuracies, optimize for SEO, and make some other tweaks, it’s still a powerful tool.

In this article, we’ll discuss why it’s important to edit AI-generated content. Then, we’ll go over some tips for doing so. Let’s get into it!

Why Editing AI-Generated Content Is Important

Let’s start by discussing why editing AI-generated content is so important. First, a little background on the subject.

AI content generators use a prompt from a human to produce new text or images. They’ve been rapidly adopted across creative industries for articles, newsletters, product descriptions, and more.

ChatGPT is probably the best known of these programs, but it’s far from the only one. According to Authority Hacker, 85% of marketers say they use some sort of AI for article writing.

This should come as no surprise, since AI can drastically improve the content creation process. It can enable marketers to boost output, and free up their time to work on more important tasks.

However, there are some caveats to using AI to generate content. For instance, Authority Hacker also states that 63% of the same marketers worry about inaccuracies. This is because AI often gets the facts wrong, and can take a lot of liberties.

Furthermore, when you create AI-generated content, it’s usually simple, unoptimized text. Meaning, it doesn’t come with good SEO or supporting links out-of-the-box.

Overall, there are a lot of positives to using AI-generated content, but it’s not perfect. That’s why editing it is so important. It needs significant polishing to make it worthy of publishing.

How to Edit AI-Generated Content (4 Tips)

Now, let’s look at four ways you can edit AI-generated content!

1. Optimize for SEO

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is crucial for any comprehensive marketing strategy. That’s because it can help you gain organic traffic and grow your audience.

Keywords play a vital role in SEO, and AI content generators are great at producing them. However, they aren’t as good at inserting them. Therefore, after you generate content using AI, you’ll need to do a comprehensive edit to add your target keywords.

You’d also be wise to make some changes for readability’s sake, since this is also a crucial aspect of SEO. For example, you can shorten paragraphs, break up text with subheadings, and add images.

In fact, including relevant images or videos can increase time on page and improve your odds of showing up in Google Discover. For the best SEO results, make sure images are optimized as well.

2. Add Relevant Links

Links are also critical for a strong SEO strategy. Just in case you’re not familiar with linking tactics, let’s go over the basics.

Internal links take users to another page on your site. Including them can enhance the user experience, increase time on site, and help search engines understand your pages’ content and context. They also make crawling and indexing your site easier.

Meanwhile, external links send users to another website. Using them can help educate your readers by providing them with more resources. They also improve your SEO by telling search engines how your page relates to other websites and what industry or niche it might be part of:

However, AI content generators can’t add links to the text they produce. That means you’ll have to insert links manually.

When you add internal and external links to AI-generated content, make sure you do so in a natural way. These links should be relevant to your content, adding value for the reader.

You’ll also want to make sure your links feature brief, descriptive anchor text. This way, links are easy to click and don’t bleed into each other.

3. Make It More User-Friendly

In addition to more practical SEO enhancements, it’s also important to edit your AI-generated content with user-friendliness in mind.

On top of the main AI-generated article structure, you could add elements like a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section or a Table of Contents (TOC). Both can drastically improve the user experience.

In particular, adding an FAQ section to the end of an article can save your audience time when they want a quick answer to a question:

When creating this section, you’ll want to anticipate the most common questions people may have. Be direct and concise in both your questions and answers.

It’s also a good idea to include keywords in your FAQ. This can even help get you into Google’s “People Also Ask” section, which would be a major boon for your site’s visibility.

Additionally, a table of contents can also boost user-friendliness by saving reader’s time and energy. It makes it super easy for users to find the information they’re looking for.

So, consider adding one at the top of your content. You can even convert TOC elements into jump links that lead readers straight to the heading they are interested in.

4. Fix Inaccuracies

Whenever you use AI-generated content, it’s essential to check the facts. That’s because you’ll sometimes get bad information.

Many people have demonstrated ChatGPT getting it wrong. Fortunately though, there are things you can do to ensure that your article is accurate.

Besides flat wrong information, you need to be wary of incomplete information. In the image above, ChatGPT leaves out one of the authors of the second paper.

To prevent errors like the above, consider the following tips:

  • Verify the facts. Not everything in your AI-generated article will need to be checked, but if it’s hard data such as a date, name, or claim, you should probably look into it with a reputable source.
  • Use something like Google Fact Check Tools to find the correct information quickly.
  • Find the primary source when possible.
  • Be mindful of the latest information the AI content generator has. If your subject is time-sensitive, you’ll need to see if there have been any updates.

Ensuring you’re publishing factual information is key to maintaining a positive online reputation.

That’s because losing someone’s trust will likely cause them to abandon your content altogether. As long as you thoroughly check your AI-generated content for inaccuracies, you shouldn’t have to worry too much about this.

Conclusion

AI-generated content can be a powerful tool for marketers. It enables you to get a lot more work done a lot faster. Plus, it will likely help improve the quality of that work as well. However, all AI-generated content requires editing. For example, checking facts, modifying for user-friendliness, and optimizing for SEO are all crucial.
